Disney Ceases Production On Henry Selick's New Stop-Motion Animated Movie

"Nightmare Before Christmas" (and "Monkeybone") director Henry Selick's new untitled, stop-motion animated film has been axed by Disney, despite the movie being slated for an October 4, 2013 release date.

A crew of 150 animators were given their walking papers after being in production for a year. Reasons for Disney's balk are unclear though sources for Deadline Hollywood say the film "just wasn’t coming together in a manner that pleased the studio."

This is a surprising bit of news considering the upcoming release of "ParaNorman" and "Frankenweenie" and the success of Selick's "Coraline." Stop-motion is pricey and time-consuming, but it's been nice seeing the resurgence of this wonderful artform. Thankfully Selick is free to shop his project to other studios, so hopefully someone will bite.

In a weird twist though, Selick is attached to helm an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" for...yup...Disney.
